About Bintang Legal
A chambers built on patience and precision.
Practising from Kuching since our founding, Bintang Legal exists to serve families and individuals navigating the careful, often personal terrain of inheritance and estate law in Malaysia.

Bintang Legal was founded in Kuching with a single conviction: that inheritance and estate matters deserve the same patience and care as the relationships they concern. These are not routine transactions. They arrive at significant moments in people's lives, often when attention, clarity, and discretion matter most.
Our founders had observed, across years in legal practice, that clients dealing with estate and inheritance questions were frequently underserved — hurried through appointments, given general answers to very particular circumstances, or left without any written record of what had been discussed. Bintang Legal was established to be different on each of those counts.
We have built our practice around deep familiarity with both the civil law framework governing Malaysian estates and the Faraid principles that apply to Muslim families — an intersection that requires careful, thoughtful handling rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Rooted in Sarawak, we carry a working knowledge of the land tenure, native customary rights, and family estate patterns that are particular to this part of Malaysia. Our clients are families, individuals, and executors who value careful counsel given in a setting that feels genuinely private.
Our Mission
To provide inheritance and estate legal counsel that is thorough, unhurried, and genuinely responsive to each family's particular circumstances — with clarity, discretion, and long-term perspective at the centre of every engagement.
Our Values
-
Patience before advice
We listen thoroughly before we counsel. Every family's situation has details that matter.
-
Clarity in communication
Legal processes explained in plain terms, with written summaries so nothing is left to memory.
-
Dignity in difficult moments
Many of our clients come to us during periods of grief or family difficulty. We take that seriously.
-
Long-term perspective
Estate planning is rarely a one-time task. We build relationships that serve families across generations.

Our Professional Standards
How we conduct our practice, manage client information, and maintain the quality of our legal work.
Sarawak Bar Registration
All practising advocates are registered members of the Sarawak Bar, subject to the professional conduct rules and disciplinary standards of the Malaysian Bar.
Legal Professional Privilege
All client communications and matter details are protected by legal professional privilege. We maintain rigorous confidentiality across all engagements, regardless of complexity.
Written Session Records
Following each consultation, we prepare a written summary for the client's own reference. This is a standard part of our practice, not an additional service.
Faraid Compliance
Our estate advice takes proper account of applicable Faraid principles where they apply, ensuring that recommendations are consistent with both civil and Islamic inheritance frameworks.
Data Protection Compliance
Client personal data is handled in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Malaysia). We collect only what is necessary and retain records only as long as required.
Fee Transparency
Our service fees are stated clearly at the outset. Clients always know what they are engaging and what the cost will be, without hidden additions or ambiguous billing.
Estate and Inheritance Legal Counsel in Sarawak
Estate administration in Malaysia operates across two distinct but often intersecting legal frameworks — the civil law applicable to all Malaysians, and the Faraid system governing the distribution of assets for Muslim estates. For many families in Sarawak, both may be relevant, and the interaction between them requires careful, knowledgeable handling.
Bintang Legal's work encompasses the full range of matters that families encounter: from the preparation of wills and the updating of beneficiary nominations, through the administration of estates via probate or letters of administration, to the resolution of disputes between family members over inheritance entitlements. In each area, our approach is to work methodically through the documents and facts before offering any recommendation.
Sarawak presents its own considerations in estate matters — including Sarawak's distinct land code, the native customary rights (NCR) land framework, and the various personal laws applicable to the diverse communities of the state. Bintang Legal's practice is built around these realities, not around a peninsular-centric model applied without adaptation.
Clients who come to us are typically at one of three stages: planning ahead while circumstances are straightforward; dealing with an estate that has recently become active following a bereavement; or working through a dispute with other family members or estate administrators. Each stage calls for a different kind of support, and we adapt our service accordingly.
